Concentric Circles

Concentric Circles - single set

A trusted advisor suggested that we consider the parties involved in this "schools" discussion as concentric circles, which are simply defined as circles with a common center. I propose that we have far more in common than the media is trying to brainwash us into believing.

Why don't we choose to put up a hand and refuse the divisive trash that is being offered?

The sad truth is that, to some degree, we are all rubber-neckers. This world has tirelessly trained us to actually enjoy the adrenaline rush created by observing, or engaging in, conflict. Understand that this a conscious decision on our part. We are literally giving ourselves permission to focus on the viewpoints lying between the overlapping circles rather than gathering resolve from the strength of our common core.

At this core, we want the same thing: for ALL children in Wake County, regardless of income, race, ethnicity or residence, to receive the highest quality education possible (see Great Schools in Wake's "Vision").

We have asked that our Board members, and all of our elected officials, work together. Stop bickering. Come to consensus. By the same token, it is expected that we citizens stand together for the sake of our children and our community. We must stop this huddling in corners, heckling one another while simultaneously throwing stones at our leaders.

So, as you bask in the sunshine this week, take a moment to daydream about what we can create for our children if we dig deep, step through our fear, and engage in a constructive dialogue. It's exhilarating to imagine the possibilities if we harnessed all of this swirling energy and aim it at squarely at our common goals. Use this area to store those ideas. Let's hash them out together and make them real.
